Arriving at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport is relatively straightforward once you know your options.

You can reach central Bucharest by train, public bus, taxi, Uber or Bolt, or a pre-arranged private transfer. There is no single option that is best for everyone.

The right choice depends mainly on where you are staying, what time you arrive, how much luggage you have and how much uncertainty you want to manage after your flight.

For many travellers, the train is the simplest low-cost option. Ride-sharing works well when you want door-to-door transport without arranging anything in advance. A private transfer makes more sense when the priority is a predictable arrival, particularly for families, groups, business travellers or late flights.

Which Bucharest Airport Are You Arriving At?

Most international visitors arrive at Henri Coandă International Airport, commonly called Otopeni Airport and identified by the airport code OTP.

The airport is located north of Bucharest, outside the central city.

Do not confuse it with Bucharest Băneasa – Aurel Vlaicu Airport (BBU), which is considerably closer to central Bucharest and handles a smaller share of passenger traffic.

This guide refers specifically to Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP).

Train from Bucharest Airport to the City

For many independent travellers, the airport train is the most efficient public transport option.

Henri Coandă Airport has a direct rail connection with Bucharest North Railway Station — Gara de Nord.

Trains operate throughout the day and night, and the journey to Gara de Nord takes around 20 minutes.

The train makes sense if:

you are travelling alone or as a couple;

you have manageable luggage;

your accommodation is near Gara de Nord;

you are comfortable completing the final part of the journey separately;

cost matters more than door-to-door convenience.

What travellers sometimes misunderstand

The train takes you to Gara de Nord, not directly to the Old Town, Calea Victoriei or your hotel.

That distinction matters.

If your accommodation is elsewhere in Bucharest, you will normally need a metro, taxi, Uber, Bolt or another form of transport after reaching the station.

For someone staying near Gara de Nord, this is hardly a disadvantage.

For a family arriving with several suitcases and staying in the Old Town, the same journey can feel much less convenient after a flight.

Where do you find the airport train?

Follow the railway signs from the Arrivals area toward the airport train station.

Airport access routes can occasionally change because of construction or operational works, so follow the current signs inside the terminal rather than relying on old screenshots or forum posts.

We would not discourage someone from taking it simply because a private transfer is available.

If your destination and luggage make the train logical, use it.

Bus 100 from Bucharest Airport

Bus 100 connects Henri Coandă Airport with central Bucharest.

It can be a practical option for travellers heading toward central areas of the city, including the route toward Piața Unirii.

Bus 100 makes sense if:

you want a low-cost direct option toward central Bucharest;

you are not carrying much luggage;

you are not in a hurry;

your accommodation is reasonably close to the route;

you are comfortable navigating the final walk or connection.

The limitation is not the bus itself

The real question is:

Where exactly is your hotel?

“Central Bucharest” covers several different areas.

A hotel near Piața Unirii creates a very different journey from accommodation near Dorobanți, Cotroceni or another part of the city.

A public transport route may look direct on a map and still leave you with a difficult final kilometre when you have luggage.

That is why airport transport should be chosen based on the whole journey to your door, not simply the first vehicle leaving the airport.

Uber or Bolt from Bucharest Airport

Uber and Bolt are widely used in Bucharest and can be a convenient door-to-door option from Henri Coandă Airport.

For many first-time visitors, ride-sharing provides a useful middle ground between public transport and a pre-arranged private transfer.

You request the vehicle after landing, see the estimated fare in the app and travel directly to your accommodation.

Ride-sharing makes sense if:

you have mobile internet;

you are comfortable using the app;

you want door-to-door transport;

you do not need somebody waiting specifically for your flight;

you are travelling with a normal amount of luggage.

What can create confusion

The difficult part is usually not booking the car.

It is finding the correct pickup point.

Airport traffic flows can change because of construction, congestion or operational requirements.

Always follow the pickup location shown inside the application and the current airport signs.

Another consideration: availability

Ride-sharing is on-demand transport.

That means:

the driver is not assigned specifically to your flight in advance;

availability can vary;

prices can change with demand;

you may need to wait or move to the designated pickup location.

None of those things make Uber or Bolt a poor option.

They simply mean that ride-sharing and a pre-arranged transfer solve slightly different problems.

Taxi from Bucharest Airport

Official taxis are another straightforward way to travel from Henri Coandă Airport into Bucharest.

A taxi may be useful if you:

want a car immediately;

prefer not to use an app;

are comfortable checking the displayed tariff;

want direct transport to your accommodation.

Use the official airport taxi area and follow current airport signage.

Do not accept unsolicited transport offers from people approaching you inside or around the terminal.

There is no honest single driving time.

Henri Coandă Airport sits north of Bucharest, and the road journey changes according to:

time of day;

weekday versus weekend;

traffic;

road works;

weather;

the exact destination in Bucharest.

Under lighter traffic, reaching northern or central Bucharest can be relatively straightforward.

During busy periods, the same journey may take considerably longer.

This is one of those situations where local context matters more than a number displayed by a route planner several weeks before your trip.

If you have a meeting, restaurant reservation, train departure or tour after landing, leave margin.

Flights can arrive late, baggage can take time and Bucharest traffic is not perfectly predictable.

Is Gara de Nord the Same as Bucharest City Centre?

Not exactly.

Gara de Nord is Bucharest's main railway station, located west of the core central visitor areas.

It is well connected to the rest of the city, but arriving there does not necessarily mean you have reached your final destination.

For example, travellers staying around:

Calea Victoriei;

Piața Romană;

University Square;

Old Town;

Piața Unirii;

will still need to continue from Gara de Nord.

This is why the airport train can be both excellent and inconvenient depending on where you are staying.

The route should fit the traveller.

Not the other way around.

What Happens After You Land at Henri Coandă Airport?

For a first visit, the arrival sequence is fairly simple.

1. Leave the aircraft

Follow the signs toward arrivals and border control where applicable.

Check the airport screens for the correct baggage belt.

Airport → train → station → second vehicle → hotel is a different experience from airport → vehicle → hotel.

When children are tired after a flight, that difference can matter.

Which Option Is Best for a Solo Traveller?

Usually, train or Bus 100 deserve serious consideration.

They are inexpensive, straightforward and useful.

If your hotel requires another complicated connection, Uber or Bolt may be worth the additional cost.

If Bucharest is not part of your itinerary, travelling into the city simply because you landed at OTP may add unnecessary time.
